Devlog #20: Mic'd Up

Steady progress as always today. I got the minor adjustments to the rooms done today, though I may continue to experiment with the particle systems currently in place. More importantly, I've finally finished doing the first recordings for the game.

The sound effects will more or less be covered by three different sources: dealing cards, riffling cards, and bridging cards. I currently only have a Shure SM58 microphone plugged into a Behringer UM2 audio interface to work with, so I just pointed it towards a flat surface and recorded myself doing all those different actions with my Bicycle playing card deck. I exported a separate file for each category of sound, with some light noise reduction to remove the slight background hum from my desktop (which is thankfully much quieter than my laptop fans). And that's really all there is to it, for now. I intend to use the sound of dealing cards for various menuing sound effects and possibly even as footsteps, which should only take some slight adjustments. I'm unsure if I'll be able to use the riffling or bridging effectively where I'm thinking of using them, but I'll have a better idea once I start messing around with it.

So for tomorrow, my goals are to:

  • Pick out the best sounds from the batches I recorded today
  • Do any necessary processing on them
  • Begin integrating sound into the project through Wwise.

It's slowly coming together.
