Devlog #23: Start The Music

At last, the music making has begun. I lost a whole night's worth of potential progress while I was trying to debug the issue with my audio interface, which as best I can tell is just the cheap build quality. Can't make any recordings for now, so I decided today I would finally start working on some of the music tracks. Generally, when I start to work on a track, I think of the type of vibe that I want to go for, and imagine melody lines or tracks that fit that sort of vibe. It's somewhat frustrating with more orchestral-oriented ideas though, as anything I come up with involving strings or piano sounds a thousand times better in my head than what I can manage to put together in my DAW. No free VST or Kontakt library can really convey it accurately. That's been my main roadblock with the first track: I had a nice piano idea in my head, but currently I'm only kinda feeling it as it is now. Hopefully I can still work with it to make something that I think sounds halfway decent. The last track, however, is a bit further along. For that track, I knew I wanted to employ more synth sounds, and what typically happens when I start a track off a synth is that I'll stumble onto a single cool sound and then build the entire rest of the track off that. In this case, I found an interesting pattern in one of the FX patches that only lines up when I have this 7/8 pattern imposed on my 4/4 project. I'm rolling with it for now, and already have a couple more instruments added to the mix. That one I'm looking forward to.

So for tomorrow, my goals are to:

  • Start making the second track
  • Start making the third track
  • Keep working on the other two

I may also look into additional sound effects for the game, but we'll see.
